Schoolroom Grants
General Description
Schoolroom Grants are awarded in the amount of $500 to teachers of grades 3, 4, and 5 in public school districts in South Dakota having fewer than 300 students in grades K-12.
Letters of invitation to apply are sent in early January to the teachers of grades 3, 4, and 5 in public school districts in South Dakota having fewer than 300 students in grades K-12.
Purpose and Qualification
The Schoolroom Grant Program was developed to award grants to assist dedicated and creative teachers in the smallest school districts in South Dakota.
Grant funds are intended to be used by the individual teacher to purchase materials for classroom use or in any other manner the individual teacher determines to be appropriate for the project. It is intended the purchased materials will be used to creatively supplement existing classroom resources.
Grant programs must promote such topics as American history, heritage, ideals, institutions, traditions, patriotism and liberty.
The Foundation encourages the projects to be creative, interactive and possibly include parent and/or community involvement.
The primary purpose of the grant excludes support for general education purposes such as literacy or understanding of mathematics, sciences, social studies and literature.
The Foundation is NOT accepting applications for student scholarships.

Policies Regarding Schoolroom Grants
All Schoolroom Grants must meet and comply with the policies established by the Foundation.

In addition applicants should be aware of the following Schoolroom Grant policies.
Grants will be awarded for direct use by the individual teacher making application. Payment of the grant funds will be made to the school for administration and disbursement consistent with the grant program. The funds are to be used during the 2012-2013 school year.
Grant funds are intended to be used by the individual teacher to purchase materials for classroom use or in any other manner the individual teacher determined to be appropriate for the project. It is intended the purchased materials will be used to creatively supplement existing classroom resources. While no specific use of the grant funds is mandated, the Foundation encourages the projects to be creative, interactive and possibly include parent and/or community involvement.
The project for which the grant is awarded must relate to one or more of the purposes of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Foundation. These include education regarding such topics as American history, heritage, ideals, institutions, traditions, patriotism and liberty. The primary purpose for the grant excludes support for general educational purposes such as literacy, or understanding of mathematics, sciences, social studies and literature.
Any materials purchased may be of a nature to be used in subsequent school years or may used on one occasion only.
The Foundation hopes and intends the grants will foster imagination and creativity by the individual teacher and fund student experiences at the classroom level which would not otherwise be possible.
The Foundation believes most teachers, particularly at the elementary school level, devote personal funds to enrich the experiences of their students. The Foundation intends the Schoolroom Grants to thank and encourage teachers and recognize their dedication to their students and their profession.
Funds from other sources, if available, may be used to supplement the grant to accomplish the program/activities for which the application is made. However, the Foundation prefers the grant not be used to supplement an existing program/activity.
Although the Foundation anticipates most applications will be submitted by individual teachers, an application from several teachers for a single grant is acceptable.
An individual teacher may submit multiple applications for different projects. However, not more than one grant will be awarded to an individual teacher.
Awards may be made to more than one teacher within the same school.
Modifications or variations in the project to accommodate changes in classroom situations are permissible provided the project retains the basic concept and structure described in the application.
